Covers
A small selection of covers i have designed at Redactive using illustrations i have commissioned, stock images and photoshoots.
Four examples of the many covers i designed while working for Time Inc UK’s cycling titles
FEATURES
At Amateur Photographer I always have such great photography to work with it makes designing the magazine a pleasure
Working on Salonfocus is always fun
I have worked on a number of supplements for Decanter magazine where I have done both the picture research and the design
After being given the headline for this feature i designed and commissioned these CGI images to run throughout the layouts tieing it all together
This feature had photography from many different sources so I made them black and white to give it some uniformity and a sense of style
For the Make pages in Childcare Professional i originate the ideas for the client then once they have been approved i create the items, direct the photoshoot and design the pages
Plumb Parts magazine was not only an informative read while designing it but fun to work on as i got to commission illustrations for all of the covers
In this feature I had to show a mans passion for his collection and the craftsmanship of each bike, I used the bike brand as the main inspiration and theme throughout.
I came up with the concept for this feature then directed photographers in the studio for lighting effects and Photoshopped background effects in to create this striking layout
Talking Trade has great covers i could commision and fun layouts interspersed with product listings
When I'm given such great pictures I believe in keeping the design simple and let the shots do all the work
With this feature behind the scenes of the prestigious cycling brand Assos I used their trademark stripe and colours throughout to give it a bit of brand identity
Woman and Home Feel Good You
When something lends itself to being a bit different its nice to go completely off template
FITNESS AND TECHNIQUE
When I want to overlap exercises to show how they work I have to make sure the photographer doesn't move from shot to shot
I drew the Gym-based strength techniques in Illustrator as I was given lots of different reference material that did not match stylistically so this made the boxout look more professional
I like exercise pages as they can often be fiddly to make look good, but when they work its like solving a puzzle
FOOD
This spread for Woman and Home was a bit like working on a jigsaw, it's a good job I enjoy cutouts
I photoshopped the headline onto the plate to make it look like it was actually on there and designed the swap for theme to flow throughout the feature
Directing this toast photoshoot led to some really great food photography that made this feature work
Recipes and their calories are an important part of fitness magazines so i have to find different ways of showing similar information
CLOTHING AND GIFTS
Christmas is always a time for gift guides and I think in this one I managed to show everything well and make it look seasonal, without looking tacky
The Oldie Christmas Gift guide where they wanted it to be a little more traditional A simple studio photoshoot I directed then illustrated to make it look a bit different
Sometimes when directing cycling clothing photoshoots It can be fun to do something a little out of the ordinary
When working with children or animals its always best to give them a little direction and then just to let them have fun.
